Site History & Aims

  • This site was launched in November 2003 in an effort to provide a useful on-line information resource for all people interested in Shetland Boats, (whether they currently own one or not).
  • Specialist interests sites such as this can be difficult to start as they won't attract regular visitors unless they contain sufficient relevant content, which is best collated from individual owners with practical experience to share.
  • In order to do this, the site is mostly interactive, with visitors being able to post (and reply to) forum messages, marketplace adverts, and a database of boat performance data. (engines/props/speeds etc.)
  • Everyone who has tried to research specific boats to purchase, upgrade or repair, should find such a shared knowledge base invaluable.
  • Given sufficient user input, the Performance Data page should be very a useful guide for owners to decide which engine HP and propellor pitch gives the optimum performance for their particular boat.

The site ran on a free-trial basis during the first year of operation (November 2003 to November 2004) to assess whether there would be enough interest to become permanent.
During That period, membership grew to 280 and the site received 17,000 hits. There were 358 forum messages, 57 classified adverts and 35 owners' photo gallery entries from all over the world.
